Friends of Tooting Common
Friends

The focus of the Friends will be to find out and respond to what the public think should be done on the common.

To increase public involvement on the commons and to increase the sense of community.

We will raise funds for various projects on the common and will also host some fun community events.

We have comissioned two maps from a local artist. One is on our Home page. The other one is much more detailed and you can buy it from us on the first Sunday of every month at the cafe for the bargain price of £2.00 . It fits a 10" x 8" frame and makes a perfect present!

We could also produce Christmas cards and calendars to sell to the public (and our local MPs and councillors!)

We will be writing Quarterly Newsletters which will be emailed out to you. We will post out to those of you who are not on e-mail but obviously we want to spend more on the common and less on postage.

Questionnaire Results

The overwhelming winner is Free Public Toilets! This is a huge undertaking for us to fund and we actually believe that the council should provide these free of charge on Tooting Common anyway - as they do on Wandsworth Common and at Battersea Park.

The MAC has started lobbying the council - watch this space!

Second was a Park Ranger. There are charities which may fund this. At the moment we are looking into exactly what is needed on our common.

Third was Plants for Butterflies and Bees. We will get the Ecology Department's help here to get the right plants into the right places. The Winter Pond in Streatham Woods is a good example of planting.

In fourth place was Facilities for Teenagers. Unfortunately the local teenagers seem unable to tell us exactly what they want! Please teenagers - email us and let us know!

Next, in fifth place, came Wildlife Meadows. Again we will work with the Ecology Department and may hold a Volunteer Day to help get started.

In Sixth place came the repair or replacement of the Ecology Pond. The MAC have a sub-committee looking into this already - we will try to get them to make some decisions soon!

Thank you to all who took part - it was a very useful survey and we are very pleased to see that so many people really do care about their common.

Please lobby your local councillors to get our free toilets opened up again.
